Sermon: Exodus 20:4-6 - “Nine Reasons Images Don’t Love God”

OUTLINE:

  1. Images distort truth about God (Rom. 1:25).

  2. True images of God are impossible (John 4:24; Deut. 4:15-16).

  3. Our Images always obscure God's glory (John 1:14; Phil. 2:5-10; John. 17:5).

  4. Images of God are not needed for presenting Christ (1 Pet. 1:23-25; 2 Tim. 3:16,17).

  5. Conceptualization of God does not require visualization of images (Deut. 12:32; Rev. 22:18, 19; Luke 2:16).

  6. Mental images are also a forbidden means of loving God (Isa. 55:8; 1 Cor. 1:21).

  7. The Word of God is to be trusted alone (2 Pet. 1:20-21; 2 Tim. 3:16-17).

  8. We must always be aware of our humble standing to learn from God (Rom. 11:33).

  9. Images discourages our responsibility to image Christ in our lives (Gen. 1:26, 9:6; Rom. 3:29, 8:29; Eph. 4:24; 1 Cor. 4:16, 11:1; 1 Thess. 1:6).

    Concluding thought: There are many idols in the land. Keeping the first commandment is not a slam dunk. We have work to do to love God more.
