Sermon: Exodus 20:8-11 - “7 Reasons for Observing the Sabbath on Sunday - 4th Commandment, Part 3” - David Rountree

OUTLINE:

  1. Sunday is the day Jesus chose to meet with his church (Matt. 28:1-9; Mark 16:2,9; Luke 24:1, 13-31; John 20:1, 11-18, 19, 26).

  2. Sunday is the day the apostles of Christ held church (John 20:19-26; Acts 20:7).

  3. Sunday is the day offerings were collected (1 Cor. 16:1,2).

  4. Sunday is the day for rejoicing in Christ’s resurrection (Psalm 118:22-24; Acts 4:8-12).

  5. Sunday is the day Christ rejoiced in his new heavens and earth (Isa. 65:17, 18, 20, 21; 66:1-2, 18-20a, 22-24).

  6. Sunday is the day to commemorate final redemption in Christ (Deut. 5:15).

  7. Sunday Sabbath observance is consistent with fourth commandment language (Exod. 20:8-11; 16:23-26; Neh. 9:14).

Application:

  1. Rejoice that God has continued a Sabbath rest for each of us.

  2. Recognize the rationality of the switch to a Sunday Sabbath and be unashamed to join Christ and his church on that day.

Sermon: Exodus 20:8-11 - “Requirement or Elective? - 4th Commandment, Part 2” - David Rountree

OUTLINE:

No Good Argument for Avoiding the Sabbath - Prov. 3:5-6; 2 Tim. 2:15,16

Two arguments for Abrogating the Sabbath

  1. Abrogation through a cessation of commands (Rom. 6:2, 15 & 1 John 5:3)

  2. Abrogation through cessation of ceremonies.

5 Reason not to abrogate the Sabbath as ceremonial

  1. Sabbath is a creation ordinance (Gen.2:1-3).

  2. Sabbath was expressly taught prior to TC (Exod. 16:4, 5, 22-30).

  3. Sabbath was the distinguishing mark of a Genesis pattern (Gen. 2:1-3; 8:10; 29:27; 50:10).

  4. Violation was a capital offense (Exod. 31:14).

  5. The Ten Commandments are treated as a moral unit that completely moves into the New Testament (Jer. 31:33; Eph. 6:2-3; 1 Tim.1:8-11).

Five Arguments for Accepting the Sabbath

  1. The rationale is decisive (Gen.2:2,3).

  2. The remembrance is demanded (Exod. 20:8).

  3. The ruler is deity (Mark 2:27,28).

  4. The reality is demonstrated (Matt.24:20).

  5. The regularity is described (Isa.56:1-7; 66:1,2,22,23).

Two Primary Reasons for Keeping the Sabbath Command

  1. Redemption Remembrance (Deut. 5:15).

  2. Creation Celebration (Exod. 20:11; Heb. 4:1-10).
